Commencing with the 2023-24 Curling Season, the Schenectady Curling Club Board of Managers has inaugurated a scholarship program intended for current or past members of the Juniors program who are at least current high school seniors.
The scholarship has been established in honor of Charlie Brown, a longtime member of the club who passed away unexpectedly in 2022. Charlie was a patient and kind teacher of the game, who contributed in many ways in a large array of roles -- from excellent curler and teammate, to coach, to stalwart service as a representative of the club to outside organizations. He truly embodied the spirit of curling, and was a champion of the tangible volunteerism and giving that keeps us going.
From the governance side, Charlie served on the Schenectady Board of Managers for 3 years, including as Vice President for 2 and also in charge of men's curling. He then moved on to the GNCC Board of Management as 2nd VP, 1st VP, and the first ever Chair for 2 years after he ushered in sweeping changes to the GNCC Board structure. He has also served on USCA committees at the National level. Outside of curling, Charlie was an avid golfer and proud of his Scottish ancestry. He was a member of the St. Andrew's Society and had served as their Treasurer for many years. He was also in charge of their scotch whiskey tastings and was very knowledgeable in that area.
There is no restriction on the use of the scholarship other than that it be applied to a post-secondary school activity: it may be used for college expenses, trade school, expenses related to military or other service, or other forms of continued preparation. For 2024, there is only a single one-time scholarship of $500 available: it will be awarded competitively based on this application form.
Applicants should be current or past members of the SCC Juniors program (prior to January 2024) who are at least current high school seniors. Past members still in college/trade school are eligible. There are not grade or transcript requirements, and the scholarship is not intended for the "best curler". Every eligible member or past member of the club is encouraged to apply.
