The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Curling Club sent 2 teams to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) College Bonspiel that was held from November 9 to 11 at the Rochester Curling Club. RPI's Team Epp, skipped by Jeff Epp with Jake Adzema as vice, Austin Gulati as second and Chris Celi as lead, won the event by beating UMass Amherst 7-2 in the A final. The also defeated RIT, Colgate, and Boston University (BU). Team Epp, with 3 members playing their first 8 end game at the bonspiel, entered the event ranked last (15th) in experience, so what a great cinderella victory!

RPI's 2nd team was skipped by Amanda Shagoury with Steve Wood as vice, Keegan Lombard as second, and Libby Brundage as lead. Others colleges represented at the tournament were Bowling Green State University and Villanova. You can watch the recorded semifinal and final games courtesy of Twelth End Sports Network (TESN).

RPI will host their first college bonspiel on Saturday, December 1 at the Schenectady Curling Club. The RPI club was founded in 2008 and has about 30 active members who practice 2-3 times a week at SCC. They participate in bonspiels throughout the GNCC, and in 2011 they sent a team to College Nationals for the first time. The team consisted of Marissa Wright (Skip), Matt Wong (Vice), Jay Chamberlin (Second), and Steve Wood (Lead).

Garnering a large number of new members during a non-Olympic year is often a difficult task. Not so for 2012, as the Fall Open House coupled with a comprehensive Curling School resulted in 32 new members for the upcoming season.

The Open House on October 5th & 6th brought 98 people to the club. This was thanks in large part to our many members who helped spread the word throughout the community. But an open house alone isn't always enough to turn a potential curler into a active one.

To further participate, many of the Open House attendees signed up for Curling School. Members Dion Warr, Charlie Brown, Becky Trousil and Kirk Wallace structured the first 2 sessions to focus on the basic techniques of curling. About 40 people took advantage of this educational opportunity. The result? 80% of those who attended Curling School ended up joining the club.

Numbers like this are hard to come by, especially in a non-Olympic year. The club wishes to thank all those who helped make this year's Curling School and Open House successful. Good luck and good curling to all our new members!
