Team Warr Hits Tough Competition at Playdowns

SCC is very proud to have had Team Warr compete in the 2013 GNCC Mixed Championship which took place at the Plainfield Curling Club. The top two finishers in this 7 team single round robin will advance to the US Mixed Nationals in Willmar, MN in March. Congratulations to winning Team Surka (Nutmeg, Rochester, Broomstones) and finalist Team Mellerup (Ardsley, Plainfield) who will be representing the GNCC at mixed nationals. Team Warr struggled in their early games but were competitive in their final games among tough competition such as two current and one prior national champion. Dion Warr led his rink of Andrea Warr, Dean Roth (of Plainfield), and Amy Howansky in this exciting event.

2013 Kayser Winners - Team Klees

Klees has been to this dance before. In 2012, Rob Klees skipped his team of Meghan Muller, Dan Muller and Sara Marchand through to the A Event Finals of the Raymond Kayser Bonspiel and came up just short. Not this year. Klees and his 2013 rink of Peggy O'Connor, Dan Muller and Christina Hall conquered teams from Ardsley, Bucks County, Rochester, Plainfield and Potomac to become this year's Kayser winners. It wasn't an easy trip this time either, lots of close games culminating in an extra end in the Finals against Courtney Shaw's rink from Potomac where Team Klees prevailed with a 1 rock steal. This year’s Kayser, the GNCC's 5 and Under Mixed event for teams with five or less years of curling experience, boasted 32 teams and was held at the Utica Curling Club in Whitesboro, NY.

So, the trophy is coming back to Schenectady and we are very happy to see it. This is the fourth time in five years that the trophy has called Schenectady home. It started in 2009 with the first Kayser win by a Schenectady team by Team Magee (Shannon Magee, Charlie Brown, Jeff Muha and Stephanie Magee). Then, back to back wins by skip Brian Damon (2010 – Damon, Amy Howansky, Tom Lancaster, Michele Moffit; 2011 – Damon, Sara Marchand, Mike Stefanik, Candace Stefanik) and now Klees. Now that's impressive.

Also at this year's event, Schenectady's Team Ladopoulos led by Nicole Ladopoulos with Jeff Brewster at vice, Roberta Feiden at second and Andy Maurer at lead came out strong and landed in the A and then D quarterfinals.

Up next for our Kayser teams... Klees and Muller will be competing in the upcoming Dykes Bonspiel for skip Scott Brennan with Jeff Brewster and Andy Maurer playing for skip Brandon Alois. Peggy O’Connor and Christina Hall will be competing in the upcoming Child's Challenge with Christina skipping and Nicole Ladopoulos will be skipping a rink which includes Roberta Feiden at lead.

Congratulations Team Klees and good luck to all our SCC curlers as they head to the remaining 5 and Under events! You can see a replay of the Kayser A Event Final on Utica's Curling Channel on USTREAM.
