CLICK HERE for details on the 2025-2026 season curling school and registration information.

Curling School at Schenectady Curling Club is a hands-on series, designed for both new and returning curlers to develop skills and understanding in all aspects of gameplay.

These classes emphasize the expressed needs of the participants, concentrating on teaching newer curlers in a controlled environment, and focusing on different aspects of the sport of curling each week. Participants will be encouraged to share their knowledge and experience with the rest of the group as various game scenarios are explored. Participants will have the opportunity to experience playing all positions on a rink.

What will we cover? This is limited only by the objectives of the participants. Some topics include: Objectives with and without the hammer; the roles of each member of a rink; effective communication from the house and hack; game strategies; assessing opponents strengths and weaknesses; identifying and responding to changing conditions; special rules near the hogline and T-line; etiquette, sportsmanship and deportment.

The Curling School is open to all adult members who would like to improve their skills and knowledge to excel in the sport of curling.

Curling started in Schenectady in 1907. R.S. Emmet, a charter member of the Mohawk Golf Club is credited with introducing the sport to Schenectady. The Schenectady Curling Club was launched as part of the Mohawk Club. By 1919, there were two sheets of natural covered ice. A fire in 1923 nearly eliminated curling in Schenectady. Again, the Emmet family was instrumental in building a three sheet facility on Front Street. As interest and membership grew, new curling quarters were needed.

By 1951 our current curling facility on Balltown Road had opened its doors. It wasn't all smooth sailing though. A fire in 1959 nearly cost our organization their facility. It occurred in the middle of a bonspiel, and in true curling fashion, since the ice was not damaged, the curling went on in the charred facility. With the insurance money from the blaze some improvements were made to the club, including, in time, a modern kitchen, a centrally located bar and women's locker rooms.

In 1953 our club opened its doors to women curlers and mixed curling was not far behind. Our teenage curling program made its debut in 1956, and just recently a little rock program has been introduced for children between the ages of six and twelve.

Our current facility has four sheets of ice, an inviting warm room and excellent kitchen and bar facilities for our members. Recent improvements to our ice shed include a more efficient dehumidification system, reconditioned curling stones and in the near future we will see a new header and new heating system installed to make curling better and more enjoyable for our members!

There are over 200 members of the Schenectady Curling Club.  The vast majority of whom curl on a regular basis. Our members come from all walks of life and range in age from six to 85. Our club is a 501(c)(3) Sports Education Foundation, dedicated to promoting the Olympic sport of curling through training and opportunities for, but not limited to, the youth of our community. In addition we provide these same training, education and competitions to all members of the community we serve.
