Congratulations to Team deRyk with a rink made up of members from Town of Mount Royal, Jacques Cartier and SCC curling clubs in winning this year's Carosella Invitational Bonspiel! Elaine deRyk's rink of Aliene Dumon, Debra Ann Gorman and Nancy Wurth defeated Charlene Fitzgerald's SCC team of Loraine Waybourn (of Broomstones), Denise Cashmere and Michele Moffit in the A event finals. This yearly women's bonspiel which was held at SCC October 24th - 26th 2014 is an exciting start to the curling season and is part of the USWCA Circuit.

The ice has been made, the open houses are done, and the club’s opening events have been put in the books. At the beginning of each season we hold men's, mixed, and women's events. These are fun games to get back on the ice. Overall winners are usually determined by a point system.


Machold Wins Robbins

The Robbins men's event was held with eight teams this year on Monday, October 13. Dan Machold skipped for the win with his team of Joe Perotto, Keagan Shaw, and David Genevich. Tom Lancaster’s team of Art Merkley, Jamie Grandusky, and Teddy Germain came up just short for the runner-up position. Three brand new curlers joined in on the fun. Thanks to Jeff Howles and Rob Klees for organizing.


Kilt and Kiltie Captured by Lancaster Rink

On Tuesday, October 14, the annual Kilt and Kiltie kicked off. Here are the results:

Winner: (15.25 points) Tom Lancaster, Paula Lancaster, Laura MacManus-Spencer and Ian Spencer (new members).

Red and Blue a Success

Thursday, October 16, marked the kick off of the women's season with their opener, the Red & Blue. In a dramatic finish that came down to the last rock in the last game, Red won 17-15. This marks the third year in a row that the Red rocks took home the win.

Following the games, everyone gathered for a wonderful meal of soup, bread and dessert. Thanks to the Women's Steering Committee for putting on a wonderful event!



SCC Open Houses

Have you watched a curling match and thought that you would love to find out more about this interesting sport? Have you wondered…who gets to do the “sweeping” and who does the “throwing”? Well, you are in luck! We have answers to these questions and so much more. Stop by the Schenectady Curling Club this October and give it a shot! (no pun intended) SCC will be holding their fall open houses the first weekend in October where we will give you free curling instructions, show you how to play and even give you the opportunity to throw a few stones yourself! Curling is a lot of fun and guess what else…it's great exercise too! So, join us during our open houses to give this great sport a whirl!

• Saturday, October 4, 2014: 10:00 am to 3:00 pm

Please be prepared if you plan to go out on the ice with us. Wear gloves, and warm, comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Layers are best. The temperature on the ice is about 38 degrees. Bring clean, rubber-soled footwear, such as sneakers, to change into. Curling equipment will be available for your use. And…the best part…this is all FREE!!! So, now you have no excuse not to come down and check us out!

Sign up and learn the Olympic sport of curling!

Curling is an ancient Scottish sport that was once played on ponds and lakes and is now played at our indoor ice facility in Niskayuna. Each class will be taught by United Stated Curling Association certified instructors. You will learn all of the basics of delivering the stone, sweeping, scoring and how to play the game.

This course is designed for adults and teens 16 years of age and older who have never tried the sport. Wear gloves, and warm, comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Layers are best. The temperature on the ice is about 38 degrees. Bring clean, rubber-soled footwear, such as sneakers, to change into. Curling equipment will be available for your use.

The course is divided up between 2 lessons. The cost is $30 total for both lessons. If you decide to join our club after completing the lessons, that $30 will be deducted from your membership dues for your first season.
 

Lesson 1: Wednesday, October 8th, 6:30-9:00pm


Lesson 2: Friday, October 10th, 6:30-9:00pm
