SCC would like to thank all of the visitors we had during our Olympic Open House events February 21st and 22nd 2014! We had a great time hosting all of you and sharing our love of curling with you. We had 437 total one-ice participants who spent around 25 to 30 minutes out on the ice trying out curling with 33% of them interested in grabbing some ice time in March and April for pickup games to give it another try! Our advanced registration process worked out great for folks (80% of our participants signed up ahead) which made it much easier for us to schedule and slot times for everyone to get out on the ice! And we were happy to see 12% of our participants were children (12 and Under) who gave the sport a try…we love our little rockers! And we had 2 people win free memberships and 5 people win free curling lessons after trying their luck in our “Draw to the Button” Contest! We had lots of media coverage so there are some great photos of our participants enjoying their time with us.

We estimate that more than 820 hours went into the planning and execution of this event; with ~65 club members contributing greater than 600 hours of volunteer time this past Thursday-Sunday. Everyone who contributed did an outstanding job to make this open house a success. A very special thanks goes out to Kirk Wallace and Becky Trousil for chairing this effort. Their attention to detail and upbeat attitude ensured an organized and successful event that surpassed our expectations!

So if you came out to our open houses and gave curling a try, we hope to see you back to continue on your road to curling fame! Look for more information coming up on future new curler activities....

Curious about what it takes to be an Olympic curler? Want to know how it feels to throw 42 pounds of granite down a sheet of ice? Wonder what goes on in that white, cinder block building on Balltown Road? Find out the answers to all of this, and much more at the Schenectady Curling Club Open House Events! Try the roaring game that's often called chess on ice and see what all the fuss is about!

Our Olympic Open House Events will be held on February 21st (6pm to 10pm) and 22nd (10am to 6pm) 2014 and they are a great opportunity to experience curling first hand. Come with a group of friends, or sign-up by yourself. If you have a group larger than 12 people, please This email address is being protected from spambots. How Does the Open House Work?

During your time at the Open House you’ll learn curling basics, get introduced to some curling traditions and terminology, and then get right on the ice to learn how to throw and sweep stones! Hot beverages, water, and snacks will be provided for your off-ice enjoyment. During the Friday evening and Saturday afternoon time slots, our warm room bar will be open offering a selection of additional libations.

Every participant will be automatically registered for a drawing to win a free one year curling membership, and we will be holding a "draw the button" contest for additional memberships and prizes. And if you enjoy your time on the ice and want more (it can be very addicting) there will be information at the open house to register for additional curling lessons and on-ice game time in March and April 2014.

How Do You Sign Up?

Click Here to pre-register for the open house. Advance registration is encouraged and discounted at $12 per person for ages 13 and up (ages 6-12 are free if accompanied by an adult). Walk-ins are welcome the day of the event as space permits. On-site registration is $15 per person. Open House registration fees will be deducted from your first year membership if you join the club for the 2014-2015 season.

What Do You Need to Participate?

First off we have some paperwork that you will need to fill out before we can get you out onto the ice. One of those items is our Participant Release Waiver. To help you get out on the ice faster, please download, read, and bring a signed copy of our Participant Release Waiver with you the day of the event.

The temperature on the ice is about 38 degrees, so wear gloves, and warm, comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Layers tend to work best. Bring clean, rubber-soled footwear, such as sneakers, to change into. Curling equipment will be available for your use.

Give It A Try!

So please come on down to the Schenectady Curling Club for our Open House Events and give curling a try. Register Now! You’ve watched it on TV and now it is your turn to try an Olympic sport that is also a very fun, exciting, and social game.
