Congratulations to Team Gallegos from the Ardsley Curling Club in winning this year’s Raymond Kayser Bonspiel, the GNCC’s Mixed 5 and Under. 40 teams competed in this highly anticipated yearly event which was held at SCC February 12th through the 15th 2015. The Kayser Mixed Bonspiel is solely for curlers with five years or less of curling experience. Of the 40 teams, players came from as far away as Virginia and both Potomac and Schenectady brought six teams each to the spiel.

Matthew Gallegos led his rink of Sharon Gallegos, Jan Zahour and Nicole Pottberg-Zahour to victory over Schenectady’s own Team Stoffer, skipped by Chad Stoffer, with Meghan Muller as vice, Kirk Wallace at second, and Becky Trousil at lead.

Schenectady had a great time hosting this year’s Kayser and hopes that all the teams enjoyed their time with us. SCC would like to thank Fay Navratil and Paula Lancaster for chairing this event and being there from start to finish to ensure everything went off well and to too many members to mention specifically who came out in support of this event and SCC. From the kitchen volunteers (special shout out to Kathy Brown, Sue Streeter, Kevin Gomes, and Jackie Donegan), to the ice crew (special shout out to Jim Ridenour and Jeff Mayott) to the bar staff (special shout out to Tom, Joan and Sherrie), to the webcasting crew (special shout out to Scott Brennan, Peggy O’Connor, Dan Machold and Rock)…it takes a whole club to put on a good bonspiel. Thank you to all those who came out and made it happen! And good luck to all of the 5 and Under curlers on their upcoming bonspiels…thank you for making Schenectady a stop on your 5 and under trail!

[caption id="attachment_3473" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Colton Winners and Finalists: Team Fodera (left) and Team Streeter (right)"]A Event Winners and Finalists[/caption]

Congratulations to Maureen Fodera who led her rink to the A Event win at the Colton Bonspiel held February 7th and 8th at SCC. Fodera’s rink of Laura Knussman, Ashlyn Hillis and Kathy Brody bested Sue Streeter’s team of Sara Johnsen, Amy Machold and Joy Del-Sette in the A Event finals on Sunday. Sara Johnsen stepped up to skip during the finals and Colleen Leszczynsky subbed in at second. The Colton is our in house Women's Club Championship that is held in honor of Charlotte Colton, Ruth Kerr, Dorothy Szymaszek and in memory of Ursula Hilborn. Charlotte and Dorothy were on hand to award their pins to the winners at this year’s event. The prestigious Colton pin features an image of the Queen of Hearts playing card with a winking Queen to represent the fact that the ladies are all queens in this bonspiel but they don't take themselves too seriously! And though the curling is always top notch there is a bit of fun at this spiel! This year’s theme was “Through the Decades” with each team representing a different decade during the event and at the Saturday evening costume party.

Congratulations to all of the event winners and finalists!

[caption id="attachment_3458" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="2015 Lovejoy Champ: David Rubin, Marty Zavadil, Jeff Mayott, Jeff Faulkner"]2015 Lovejoy Champ[/caption]

Congratulations to Team Zavadil in winning this year’s Lovejoy bonspiel, SCC’s Men’s in house Championship. Marty Zavadil led his team of Jeff Mayott, David Rubin, and Jeff Faulkner to victory over Dion Warr’s rink of Kirk Wallace, Steve Wood, and Paul Clarke. In an interesting turn of events, just recently the Schenectady Gazette featured a photo of the team that won the 1990 Lovejoy Bonspiel. It just so happens that Marty Zavadil was on that winning team as well…but as lead! So Zavadil has come full circle…winning this prestigious event 25 years later but as a skip! (just for the record that winning team on January 7th 1990 was Jack Stopera, Matt Staccone, Doug Spring and Marty Zavadil.)

Congratulations to all of the event winners and finalists:

Lovejoy Champions: Team Zavadil: Marty Zavadil, Jeff Mayott, David Rubin, Jeff Faulkner
Finalists: Team Warr: Dion Warr, Kirk Wallace, Steve Wood, Paul Clarke
